PLAYER SPOTLIGHT I

  • Hollywood Herald | Player Spotlight

It was an interesting day for the Rams Front Office with the Trade Window opening and the Free Agent Draft starting.

In the end the result was kinda disappointing: Only 1 new player joined the team. We'll take a good look at who he is and what he brings to the table right after discussing what happened at the trade-front.

The Rams were pretty actively making offers for a number of players, including the already talked about MLBs Germaine Pratt and Kevin Pierre-Louis. Talks were shut down pretty quickly however when both teams couldn't agree on the value at all. Again, the Rams were looking for a non-premium option at the position so they weren't willing to pay premium prices for them. There's still a few options on their list, however the Rams aren't optimistic, they will get a deal done for any of them after they couldn't get even close to a deal on any player they were making an offer for.

The Rams probably will stay out of the active trade-market now and will let the other teams come to them if those teams are interested in a Rams' player. If no team shows signs of interest, the Rams will just move on to the season with their initial roster.

In the Free Agent Draft the Rams were heavily targeting one of the "big 3" Runningbacks: Freeman, Guice and Miller. After Freeman and Guice went very early, the Rams fortunately were able to claim RB Lamar Miller and get their new starting RB. If they had missed out on him, options were getting really scarce. So let's have a look at our new Rams starting Runningback: Lamar Miller

    Name: Lamar Miller

    Position: RB

    Overall: 80

    Age: 29

    Height: 5'10"

    Weight: 220 lb

    Archetype: Elusive Back

Lamar Miller is a shifty back, who can let defenders miss with his elusiveness. He's been the Texans' starting RB when Coach Pulse was the headcoach there, so he's familiar with the system of coach Pulse already, which was also a big selling point for him. His ability to change directions is outstanding so if the first hole closes before he can run through it, instead of being tackled for a loss, he can quickly adapt and cut into another direction to possibly get a big gain. He's got good speed and is extremely secure with the ball and won't fumble a lot. While he definitely is no runningback like Derrick Henry who runs over defenders, Miller uses his quick lateral agility to juke linebackers and lets them tackle the air.

His ability to catch the football out of the backfield and to passblock are traits coach Pulse also highly appreciates from his new RB.

We expect Miller to be the unquestioned starter in that offense and to gain 1500+ yards from scrimmage if he makes it healthy through all 16 regular season games. If not, the Rams are confident in their young RB Akers who showed his talent in the first preseason game against the Saints, gaining around 150 yards from scrimmage. Miller will wear #27.
